TROLLING WITH "MO" FOR TROUT AND ROCK

- Aboard the Drizzle Bar

Last year at the P.S.G. Fishing and Boating Flea Market one of the vendors who sells flies demonstrated to my son and I how realistic flies become when wet. He dipped a fly in a cup of water and said when it’s wet it looks like a bay anchovy or sliver side. Well when he pulled the fly from the cup of water it really made the fly look alive. It looked so real we asked if it could be used for trolling or jig it? He said "Why not, it should work." What a sales pitch! You got it; we purchased about half dozen of them.

Spring season we did a lot of chumming and no trolling except for the trophy season. When fall season was underway and chumming became slow we started bottom bouncing. When bottom bouncing the trick is to go slow and use small bucktails. One day while trolling my son said he was going to try one of the flies we purchased at the flea market. He tied it on the leader and said it should work it sure looks real. Well guys this fly out fished the small bucktails that day. I’m still a believer in small bucktails but we will also use some flies.

When trout started showing in the upper bay the fly out fished the bucktails every time. It was almost unheard of to limit out on trout in this area but with this fly we did at times. This fly will catch White Perch, Rock and lots of Trout. Mike Oliaccio will be at the Flea Market again this year and you can find him next to the P.S.G. Grand Prize table in the fire hall. I called Mike the other day to order more of those flies but did not know the name because he didn’t have a name for the fly. He asked me to give it a name so after thinking how it caught more trout than bucktails. I came up with the name "MO" M for Mike and O for Oliaccio and "MO" Trout. If you talk to Mike and want to order any flies they are $2.00 each and ask for "MO".

Pattern: Green top, White bottom and silver tinsel, big eyes, red/green head 2/0 hook.
